Phoenix These are a series of three films based around a Chinese Phoenix bicycle. Two of the films are presented side by side. In Phoenix 'Please take my bicycle apart. I want to post it to England' (45 minutes), a Chinese cycle repair man dismantles the bicycle outside his home in a Beijing suburb, helped by his wife and young son, packing all the components into a couple of sacks. In the accompanying film Phoenix 'Please put my bicycle back together again, and fix it to go forwards when I peddle backwards' (50 minutes), an English cycle repair man takes the parts and reassembles them in the back room of a Shropshire workshop as his colleagues watch, drink tea and listen to Radio 2. The third film Re-enactment 'Lai Bai has fixed his tricycle to go forwards as he peddles backwards. This'll fox them he thinks. Pingyau, China' (3 minutes). In this Heather Morison is filmed riding the Phoenix past the statue of Hercules in a park in Shrewsbury, going forwards as she peddles backwards, watched by bemused passers-by. | |
