Hothouse, 2005 Hothouse is a sound installation originally commissioned by Q Arts Derby. It is a three part composition constructed from recordings made using specialist microphones inside the trees of Derby arboretum. These recordings pick up the internal cracking and groaning of the trees, the sounds of animals and birds moving across them, the sap rising, and the ground water flowing below. The title of the work is taken from the science fiction novel of the same title by Brian Aldiss in which a future earth is presented in which a single tree has colonised every land mass, humans have devolved and a fungus is the most intelligent life form on the planet. The work can be listened to online by clicking here (for help about how to listen click here). | |
